I’m Not a Robot is a 2023 Dutch-language short science fiction film written and directed by Victoria Warmerdam. The film follows Lara, who after a series of failed CAPTCHA tests plunges into a strange new reality. The film had its world premiere at the Netherlands Film Festival last year in the Golden Calf Competition.
Recently, the film was nominated for the Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
The film involves Lara Vermeulen, a Dutch music producer, is listening to a cover of Radiohead‘s “Creep” at work when a system update forces her to restart her laptop. The update presents her with a series of CAPTCHA tests, which she repeatedly fails despite inputting the correct answers. Frustrated, she calls tech support. The voice on the other end suggests that Lara can’t get through because she is a robot, adding, “You wouldn’t be the first to find out this way.”

The Boston Sci-Fi Film FestivalLIVE @ THE SOMERVILLE THEATRE February 12-17, 2025
Boston SciFi is a cinematic event held every year in February. SF50 in 2025 will be a hybrid event, live and virtual. BSF hosts roughly more than 30 features, 80 shorts, 10 workshops and panels and numerous parties. The in-person events end with a cinematic overload called THE MARATHON, a 24 hour non-stop binge view of classic, not-so-classic and downright schlocky films. It comes with guests, games and surprises.
Festival Passes and Marathon tickets are available at The STORE.
Individual shows will be on sale closer to the Fest.
BSF was born at the legendary Orson Welles Cinema just outside of Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. 2025 marks our 50th anniversary, making BSF the longest running genre fest in America.
