Nick Thomas reviews Ball Lightning as part of the Below the Line Film Festival

As I reflect on this piece, the one word I keep coming back to is beautiful.

Ball Lightning was an absolute joy to watch, I really loved it. Catriona Baker has created
something truly wonderful in this piece. The art work is gorgeous and evocative and not
only is it visually satisfying to watch but it tells a powerful story as well. Using two very
different mediums Catriona Baker takes us on a real journey. When the story is in the
present watercolors are used to create a feeling of innocence and life, this is contrasted
with hard and heavy oil pants when we flash back to Germany during the pandemic of
1918 and the Nazis years later.

The story is poetic and heart warming and perfectly encapsulates that feeling of
innocence that we all feel as children, and the times when we lose that innocence and
are forced to grow up.

Ball Lightning is a must and if you are anything like me be sure to have a box of tissues
on hand.
